Frequently Asked Questions
Features & Learning
Q: What is KATAKU?
A: KATAKU is a specialized flashcard and learning companion app designed to empower learners—especially hearing-impaired students—to strengthen their vocabulary, grammar, and spoken articulation through intelligent spaced repetition and on-device speech processing.
Q: How does Spoken Recall work?
A: During a flashcard review session, you can press and hold the “Hold to Speak” (Tahan untuk Berbicara) button to practice articulating your answer aloud. The app transcribes your speech in real-time on your device so you can visually verify your pronunciation and phrasing before flipping the card to reveal the solution.
Q: What is the FSRS algorithm used in KATAKU?
A: KATAKU uses the modern FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithm. It calculates optimal review intervals based on memory stability and difficulty ratings (Again, Hard, Good, Easy), ensuring you review material right before you are likely to forget it.
Permissions & Troubleshooting
Q: Why does KATAKU request Microphone and Speech Recognition permissions?
A: KATAKU uses these permissions exclusively for the optional Spoken Recall feature:
- Microphone Access: Captures your voice while you actively hold the speak button.
- Speech Recognition: Translates your spoken response into text on-screen.
The app works fully for regular flashcard study and spaced repetition even if these permissions are disabled.
Q: How do I grant or revoke microphone/speech permissions?
A: You can update permissions anytime in iOS Settings:
- Open Settings on your iOS device.
- Scroll down and select KATAKU (or go to Privacy & Security > Microphone / Speech Recognition).
- Toggle Microphone and Speech Recognition ON or OFF as desired.
Privacy & Offline Use
Q: Does KATAKU send my voice or study data to any server?
A: No. KATAKU operates with a strict Privacy-by-Design and On-Device-First architecture. All speech recognition, sentence corrections, flashcard databases, and learning statistics are processed and stored 100% locally on your device. Nothing is sent to the cloud.
Q: Can I use KATAKU offline?
A: Yes! KATAKU is fully offline-first and does not require an active internet connection to create decks, practice cards, or use speech recognition.
